Former “American Idol” finalist Vonzell Solomon filed a not guilty plea to carrying a concealed firearm and will not appear at her arraignment, which was scheduled for today. Solomon, 24, also known as Baby V, was stopped June 10 at Southwest Florida International Airport after security officials discovered an unloaded gun in her bags. Solomon posted an apology on her Myspace page shortly after the incident. Her attorney, Michael Rich, filed the not guilty fee late last week. Solomon’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 25 before Lee County Judge Leigh Frizzell Hayes. You're in our thoughts and prayers Vonzell! |
| • Baby V’ apologizes for taking gun to airport | 22 Jun 2008 |

Former "American Idol" finalist Vonzell Solomon has apologized for bringing a handgun to the airport last week. "Baby V" posted the apology on her MySpace page, where she calls her June 10 detainment an "unfortunate incident" and "an honest mistake." "I in no way intended to enter the plane with a firearm," Solomon says in her statement. "I was rushing to make a scheduled flight and simply did not realize it was in my handbag until I went through security." Security officials discovered the unloaded gun at a Southwest Florida International Airport checkpoint, according to Lee Port Authority spokeswoman Barbara-Ann Urrutia. Solomon, 24, told authorities she'd forgotten about the gun. Officials confiscated the gun and issued Solomon a notice to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon into an airport. The Fort Myers woman has a concealed-weapons permit, but handguns still aren't allowed in an airport. Solomon's manager and father, Larry Goethie, said he issued the statement so she could put the matter behind her. "We want this thing to go away, so Von can get on with her life and her career," Goethie said Wednesday. "Sometimes bad things happen to good people, you know what I mean?" Solomon has a new single coming out in August, Goethie says. The singer is on tour in Missouri. Goethie declined further comment about the airport incident or the single. Solomon won't comment on either subject, he said. In her statement, Solomon thanks her family, friends and fans for their concern and prayers regarding the incident. She also thanks the Lee County Port Authority for "handling this situation with professionalism and grace." Three years ago, Solomon finished third on the Fox Network's popular "American Idol" talent contest. |
