• MTV, Disney, Nickelodeon stars among celebrities in "Oz, The Musical" at Miller | 06 Dec 2009
KALAMAZOO — Todrick Hall is the wizard bringing a new “Oz“ to kids. He is also the wizard bringing kids literally into “Oz.”

“Oz, The Musical,” on its first national tour, will be at Miller Auditorium Dec.13. Up to 100 area kids will be onstage for the show, playing flying monkeys, Munchkins and other residents of Oz. They’ll get to perform with a cast of people seen on MTV’s “Making The Band,” Disney Channel’s “That’s So Raven,” “High School Musical” and other tween pop shows.

Hall, the writer, director and choreographer, said his goal for the show is to give at least 100 kids at each of the tour’s stops a chance to perform with the pros. (Auditions for the Kalamazoo stop were held the weekends of Nov. 14 and Nov. 21.)

He could’ve played it safe with professional kid actors, “but I’d like everyone to have the opportunity to be onstage,” Hall said while at an “Oz” audition in Indianapolis.

Hall, 24, knows what it’s like to be a kid with the stage bug. He was in theater and dance in Texas, starting at 9 in the Lubbock Ballet Theatre. He went on to do weekend shows at Six Flags over Texas, performed on cruise ships and hit Broadway in “The Color Purple.”

But before Broadway, when he was 17, Hall decided to create a musical fueled by an obsession with the 1939 “Wizard of Oz.”

The rights to the film were out of his teen’s reach, but he found that the original L. Frank Baum book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” was in public domain.

He re-imagined the story with a modern twist and new music. “It keeps the basic premise and heart of the story, but it’s all modernized as if it were to happen today.”

Dorothy (Aundrea Fimbres, “Making The Band,” Danity Kane) is a rebellious teen. The Tinman (Nathaniel Flatt of the group V-Factory) is a lounge singer who’s not famous because he just doesn’t put his heart — or any heart — in his music.

Scarecrow (Thayne Jasperson, “So You Think You Can Dance” and “High School Musical 1 & 2”) never went to college so he has a lousy job standing in a corn field. The Lion (Orlando Brown, “That’s So Raven”) is an Elvis-like King of the Jungle who is hiding a lot of fears.

Also in the cast are Ryne Sanborn from “High School Musical” 1-3 as the Wizard and Ryan Knowles, host of Nickelodeon’s “ME: TV,” as the Wicked Witch of the Westside. Singer and actress Vonzell Solomon, third-place finisher on Season 4 of “American Idol,” plays a character named Glinda.

Hall inserted a few new characters, like a trio of doo-wop girls who narrate and serve as a chorus. The 12 original songs range from hip-hop to country and rock.

“When I read the script, I was just laughing my way through it,” Fimbres said from her home in Upland, Calif.

Being a new Dorothy, one with “a little more attitude in her” than the Judy Garland model, is going to be a fun time for her, she said. Especially when compared to the trauma of “Making The Band.”

P. Diddy’s MTV reality show, in seasons spanning 2005-’06 and 2008-’09, resulted in Fimbres being in the girl group Danity Kane, which made two hit albums.

Overall, “it was an amazing experience,” she said.

Fimbres had wanted to be a singer since she was a girl, and had done some studio work by the time she auditioned for the show. Diddy’s “not going to pick some random Mexican girl from Upland, Calif.,” she thought.

But she was wrong. “From then on, it was a whirlwind for four years,” she said.

It’s a tough business, and making matters worse, MTV viewers got to catch the good and the bad. “When you have cameras in your face, and you’re five girls who are just getting to know each other — women don’t always get along as it is, and we had our issues.”

Creative differences with Diddy, problems with management and within the group brought it to an end by spring 2009. MTV showed it all in “The Rise and Fall of Danity Kane” that April.

“It’s hard to get used to, those cameras right there when you wake up in the morning,” she said. “And when you got those tears coming down.”
