| Not guilty! | 30 Jun 2008 |
|
Former “American Idol” finalist Vonzell Solomon filed a not guilty plea to carrying a concealed firearm and will not appear at her arraignment, which was scheduled for today. Solomon, 24, also known as Baby V, was stopped June 10 at Southwest Florida International Airport after security officials discovered an unloaded gun in her bags. Solomon posted an apology on her Myspace page shortly after the incident. Her attorney, Michael Rich, filed the not guilty fee late last week. Solomon’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 25 before Lee County Judge Leigh Frizzell Hayes. You're in our thoughts and prayers Vonzell! |
| Baby V’ apologizes for taking gun to airport | 22 Jun 2008 |
|
Former "American Idol" finalist Vonzell Solomon has apologized for bringing a handgun to the airport last week. "Baby V" posted the apology on her MySpace page, where she calls her June 10 detainment an "unfortunate incident" and "an honest mistake." "I in no way intended to enter the plane with a firearm," Solomon says in her statement. "I was rushing to make a scheduled flight and simply did not realize it was in my handbag until I went through security." Security officials discovered the unloaded gun at a Southwest Florida International Airport checkpoint, according to Lee Port Authority spokeswoman Barbara-Ann Urrutia. Solomon, 24, told authorities she'd forgotten about the gun. Officials confiscated the gun and issued Solomon a notice to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon into an airport. The Fort Myers woman has a concealed-weapons permit, but handguns still aren't allowed in an airport. Solomon's manager and father, Larry Goethie, said he issued the statement so she could put the matter behind her. "We want this thing to go away, so Von can get on with her life and her career," Goethie said Wednesday. "Sometimes bad things happen to good people, you know what I mean?" Solomon has a new single coming out in August, Goethie says. The singer is on tour in Missouri. Goethie declined further comment about the airport incident or the single. Solomon won't comment on either subject, he said. In her statement, Solomon thanks her family, friends and fans for their concern and prayers regarding the incident. She also thanks the Lee County Port Authority for "handling this situation with professionalism and grace." Three years ago, Solomon finished third on the Fox Network's popular "American Idol" talent contest. |

| Airport Accident | 12 Jun 2008 |
|
As many of you may have heard, Vonzell was questioned Tuesday after airport security found a handgun in her large purse. First off, It is legal to fly with a declared, unloaded and secured handgun on every airline in the US. The traveler must unload the firearm and place it in a secure container within the luggage. This declaration requires that the traveler show the weapon and storage container to an airline agent. It's not a big deal - it may slow down your check-in but it's nothing too serious. Ammunition must not be in the bag - it normally gets shipped via freight or is purchased at the destination. Solomon's manager and father, Larry Goethie, told People.com, "Vonzell wants everyone to know that this was an honest mistake. She had a big purse and just didn't realize that the gun was in it." He added that Solomon has a permit for the weapon, and carries it for safety during her long road trips. "She's a single woman, and she is sometimes in situations where she needs protection. She went through the classes for proper gun safety, and tries to do everything by the book." Mistakes happen, and hopefully this situation gets cleared up soon. Our thoughts are with Vonzell. |

| 'BABY V' STILL MAKING NEWS' | 17 Apr 2008 |
|
Several weeks back, I wrote about former "American Idol" contestant and Fort Myers native Vonzell Solomon, who had joined the touring dance and music show "Simply Ballroom." More recently, USA Today caught up with Solomon and offered a few more tidbits (some of this reported in The News-Press previously) about what she has been doing since she finished third in Season 4 of the hit Fox reality show. She still lives in Fort Myers. After "Idol," Solomon was a celebrity spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service and went on a 50-city tour of postal facilities. (Remember, she used to be a rural carrier right here in Lee County.) She hopes to play more postal union conventions. She has started her own record label - Melodic Records - but has no release date for an album. She says she is learning the cha-cha while working with all the "Simply Ballroom" dancers and jokes that maybe she'll wind up on the ABC reality show "Dancing with the Stars." For years, I have wondered why Solomon - who is tremendously talented - hasn't become a bigger star. Many former "Idol" finalists who finished lower than she did have gone on to successful music careers as well as TV and movie gigs. Maybe she is just a small-town girl at heart. Nothing wrong with that. http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080414/COLUMNISTS39/804140311/1013/LIFESTYLES |

| USA TODAY - Former mail carrier 'Baby V' still knows how to deliver | 05 Apr 2008 |
|
Before her big break on Idol in 2005, Vonzell Solomon spent the previous year and a half as a rural mail carrier in Fort Myers, Fla. Thanks to the job, she was better prepared than most to face Simon Cowell. "Little dogs are always the feisty ones," she says. Almost three years later, Baby V no longer delivers mail, but she might be the only Idol finalist with the backing of the federal government. After Idol, she was a celebrity spokeswoman for her old employer, the U.S. Postal Service and helped unveil a new stamp. These days, Solomon is focused on performing full time. In October, she played a sweet 16 party in the Bahamas. She also has her own label (Melodic Records) but no release date for an album. "I wouldn't be on this track if it weren't for Idol," she says. Solomon, who still lives in Fort Myers, hasn't forgotten her roots in civil service. She's hoping to play a few more postal union conventions. After finishing third on Idol, Solomon embarked on a 50-city tour of postal facilities and post offices. "Every time I went to a new facility, they made me feel like family," she says. For the past month, she has been on tour with fellow fourth-season finalist Anthony Fedorov in Simply Ballroom. They sing while ballroom dancers do their thing. "I'm learning the cha-cha," Solomon says. "I'm getting it together." What's next for her? Depends how many dance moves she picks up. "I might be on Dancing With the Stars," she jokes. |
| Birthday Message From The American Idol Website | 22 Mar 2008 |
|
Having gotten all the way to an extremely impressive third place in the fourth season of "Idol," it's amazing to think that Vonzell Solomon didn't even make it past the initial audition the first time she tried out for the show! She charmed viewers with her amazing voice as well as her big smile and easygoing personality. What's most interesting about Vonzell as a singer is how many types of music she can actually sing. As is listed on her MySpace page, Vonzell sings Gospel, Jazz, R & B, Hip Hop, Country, Rock, Opera, and even songs of the Broadway musicals! Since being on AI, Vonzell has taken on the artist name "Baby V," and has even become CEO of her own independent record label, Melodic Records. Her CD, My Struggle, was released to iTunes in January of last year, and is expected to hit stores within the next few months. She also appeared in the film Still Green. Vonzell has done quite a lot in the holiday music realm in her post-Idol career, having been featured on the compilation Dear Santa holiday collection with some huge names in the industry, including Alicia Keys and Nick Lachey. She also recorded a song called "It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas" for another Christmas album, Breaking For The Holidays. In addition, Vonzell became a paid spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, as she was a mail carrier before being on American Idol. Vonzell is now on the Simply Ballroom tour. On her website, this is how the show is described: "Currently playing to sold-out audiences across the UK, SIMPLY BALLROOM is now making it’s North American debut starring Celebrity Host, DEBBIE REYNOLDS and AMERICAN IDOL finalists, VONZELL SOLOMON & ANTHONY FEDEROV and a cast of world-class dance champions. A lavish production full of glitz, glamour and breathtaking performances! From the perfection of the Waltz to the passion of the Tango to the power of the Paso Doble, this beautifully staged and orchestrated production has it all!" Many kids will be thrilled to learn that Vonzell will also be one of the AI alums at Idol Camp this summer! Happy Birthday Vonzell! |

| Stage show’s national tour features ‘Baby V’ | 04 Mar 2008 |
|
Vonzell “Baby V” Solomon, a Lee County resident, is one of the featured performers on the just-launched “Simply Ballroom” national tour, according to the “American Idol” Web site. Solomon rose to fame as a contestant the fourth season of the hit reality TV show. She made it into the Top 3 finalists before being eliminated. Carrie Underwood, who is now one of country music’s biggest stars, went on to win Idol that season. According to the online announcement, Solomon is joining fellow Idol contestant Anthony Fedorov on the tour. The show’s celebrity host is actress and singer Debbie Reynolds. “Simply Ballroom” is a stage show featuring some of the world’s top competitive ballroom dancers kind of like a “Stars on Ice,” only with dancing. A British tour of the show did well and now an American tour has opened. Solomon and Fedorov apparently are part of the musical performances during the show. “Simply Ballroom” was slated to start last night in Hartford, Conn. There are several Florida stops, including Lakeland (March 25, 26), Sarasota (March 28), Tallahassee (March 29, 30), Panama City (March 31), West Palm Beach (April 1) and Jacksonville (April 5, 6). There was also a mention of a Fort Lauderdale performance, but I couldn’t find it on any schedule. Currently, there is no Fort Myers date. Considering Solomon’s popularity here, that sure looks like a dumb oversight. Thanks Hunter |

NORTHFIELD, Mass. - NORTHFIELD, Mass. - Hundreds of star-struck teens have been finding a little bit of Hollywood tucked in small-town New England this summer. "American Idol camp - that's something," said camper Natalie Kais, 12, of Fairfield, her eyes shining. The camp, for 12- to 15-year-olds, just finished its inaugural year. Campers there love "American Idol" and dream of moving from the camp's makeshift wooden platforms to the shiny "Idol" stage. Idol Camp treads a tightrope, making a summer performing arts camp feel like a way to connect to the "American Idol" TV show experience. One overcast morning early in the second 10-day session, the whole camp belted out "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and then trooped off to singing, dancing and acting classes. They walked in cliques with new friends, varying their paths to better their odds of running into guest teacher Vonzell Solomon, the third-place finisher in Season 4 of "American Idol." They gossip about how she gave an exclusive Idol Camp performance. They discuss how their lives will be when they're as famous as she is. A quick glance at the campers' cafeteria tables formed a sea of "American Idol" blue. All staff and campers were required to wear laminated ID tags around their necks. Many campers also chose to wear Idol Camp T-shirts and caps. Like the show, the camp builds up to a finale, in this case a concert for parents on the penultimate day. All 150 campers sang together. Then kids wrote letters to themselves about what they learned and how it will help them in the future. The camp will mail them home to the campers in six months, as a reminder. Before the letters arrive, campers will have plenty of memories to share with friends. "When Vonzell came, everyone was screaming and jumping out of their chairs," said Miles Keeney, 13, of Greenwich. "But we ate lunch with her yesterday like a real person." ... more? |

Hi everyone! I just put up a new layout to last the rest of the summer. There are a couple things I may mess with to get them looking just right, but for the most part the layout is done. I want to give a HUGE thank you to Steph and Svenn for giving me an enormous amount of assistance this past week. Steph helped me code this layout and completely change how the pages run. From now on all pages are going to be .php instead of .html like before. Svenn helped me renew this domain, so I am able to keep this site running for the next 12 months. Thanks a lot you two! Stay tooned for new Vonzell news, a video, and some pictures coming soon! |

Congratulations to Halie Boling and Kalee Coyle for winning the "So You Think You Can Sing" competition. Halie Boling, age 11, sang an amazing version of "And I Am Telling You", by Jennifer Holiday. Made famous by recent American Idol contestant in the film, Dreamgirls. Halie recieved the only standing ovation of the night, and went on to win in the 8-15 year old age group. Her prize was free professional vocal lessons for a year. Halie, who lives in Estero, already takes vocal lessons, but said she plans to donate the prize. Halie, who has been singing "since she's been able to talk," according to her mother, said she wanted to be in the program just for the chance to perform. "I felt confident, but I didn't think I'd get it," Halie said after winners were announced. Kalee Coyle gets a trip for two to audition for the next season of "American Idol for winning the 16-25 age group. Coyle, who sang the song "Forgive" from country singer Rebecca Lynn Howard, said she didn't believe she was going to be the night's winner and had already picked out another contestant for the top spot. When they called her name, "I couldn't breathe," she said. Her parents, Karen and Kent Coyle, also were surprised. "There's a lot of talent out there," Karen Coyle said. "That's why I was surprised." Both winners also received a $500 gift certificate to The Diamond District. With totals not yet in, more than $20,000 was raised for The Children's Network of Southwest Florida and the Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon Foundation. The Children's Network of Southwest Florida takes care of more than 1,600 abused children in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades and Hendry counties. Solomon, 23, a finalist from "American Idol," also performed. |

Typhani Kulikowski is a diva. The 10-year-old North Fort Myers girl auditioned for "So You Think You Can Sing" this morning, captivating her audience with her voice, her jokes and her "spirit" fingers, a cheerleading move in which your fingers wiggle middair. "I did it," she whispered to her mother as the judges and Fort Myers native and American Idol star Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon walked out of Children's Hospital in south Fort Myers. Children's Network of Southwest Florida teamed with the Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon Foundation in a singing competition to raise money for the estimated 1,600 abused children in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties. After "Baby V" swapped tips, gave high-fives and sang with Typhani, she hugged her goodbye. "You are a superstar," said the older diva to the younger. "Now we're both famous." Three backup singers (Kenya C. Hathaway, Sharlotte Gibson and Sy Smith) who routinely work with the likes of Beyonce and Mariah Carey are the "American Idol" equivalent of a musical rescue squad, doing everything in their power to make the show's would-be stars shine. When a contestant forgets their words, or starts to go off pitch, the background singers try to help them to make each contestant sound their personal best. This article commented on who the background singers say are the contestants who are the most prepared to perform every week. "The trio relishes contestants who approach the task prepared. This year, that includes Phil Stacey, Doolittle and LaKisha Jones. From seasons past, they fondly recall Vonzell Solomon, Anwar Robinson and Paris Bennett. Solomon "loved music and it just came out of her. It's fun backing up people like that, people who come out there and give it all," Gibson said." To read the full article CLICK HERE |

| Idol Behind the Scenes | 17 Jan 2007 |
|
Before season four of American Idol the contestants lived together in a mansion. They were surrounded by chaperones- from producers to contestant coordinators making sure the Idols are where they need to be- and they are attended to by chefs, chauffeurs, stylists and security guards. By the time season four had rolled around the stress of twelve people to a house became too much, and the mansion was swapped for rental apartments. "We found it wasn't really fair [to the contestants]," says executive producer Ken Warwick. "They were living on top of each other. It was very nerve-wracking. It was detrimental to the show." The luxury apartment compound includes a pool, a spa and concierge service - not to mention Hollywood-friendly floor-plan names, like the Hepburn and the Monroe. The contestants live in two-bedroom apartments, usually two to a room in twin beds, and are shuffled about as their numbers dwindle. During the fourth season, Vonzell Solomon, 22, who is the CEO of her record label, Melodic Records, and is recording her sophomore album, bunked with Nadia Turner and Jessica Sierra and, later, Carrie Underwood. Things had improved in the sense that they had stylists and they were getting recognized. "One day, when I was shopping with Scott Savol, we saw Ice-T at the mall - and he recognized us!" recalls Solomon. Tuesday nights were all about the voting - every contestant cast numerous votes for his or herself, using phones provided by the show. ("Idol" is broadcast live on the East Coast but airs three hours later on the West Coast, when the contestants can watch and vote.) "I remember sometimes being in the apartment after the show was taped, with everyone voting for themselves on their cellphones," says Solomon. The idols were often given the opportunity to go on different road trips. Group excursions included a trip to Dolce, Ashton Kutcher's restaurant, and bowling. "Nadia's a great bowler - I never would have thought that," says Solomon. CLICK HERE to read more of this article. |
