"Oz, the musical," a contemporary musical treatment of the popular L. Frank Baum story "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," will be staged at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and 30 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theatre, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. The original musical was written by Plainview native Todrick D. Hall. Direction and choreography also are by Hall, who danced with Ballet Lubbock at age 9 under artistic director Yvonne Racz, and, more recently, appeared in the Broadway musical "The Color Purple." The play's stars, said Hall, will include four former "American Idol" participants: • Mikalah Gordon as Dorothy. She was the 11th-place finalist on the fourth season. She has been signed to a development deal with Warner Bros., and has been compared to Fran Drescher and Bette Midler. • Scott Savol as the Lion. He was the fifth-place finalist on the fourth season. • Rickey Smith as the Tinman. He was the eighth-place finalist on the second season. • Vonzell Solomon as Glinda. She was the third-place finalist on the fourth season. Now CEO of independent record label Melodic Records; before starting the company, she was the highest finishing "American Idol" contestant not to receive a recording contract afterward. In addition, hundreds of Lubbock and area children have been cast as Munchkins and in other small roles. Gordon, Savol, Smith and Solomon are expected to arrive in Lubbock on Aug. 25, and begin rehearsals on Aug. 26 with local actors. The play includes 13 original pieces of music. |

Seated beside me at the open-mike was Vonzell Solomon, better known to her fans as "Baby V" Solomon, who finished third on the fourth season of "American Idol." She was not the only "Idol" alum scheduled to visit the camp this summer. Jon Peter Lewis, Chris Sligh and Paris Bennett are also slated to appear. Solomon, a former postal worker from Fort Myers, Fla., said she is more than happy to remain under the "American Idol" umbrella, mentoring children at Idol Camp. She said, "I always wake up and pinch myself 'cause I feel like I'm dreaming, and I'm gonna have to wake up and deliver the mail, and I'm like, 'No!' " During her week at Pali Mountain, Solomon ate every meal with the campers, played improvisation games with them and watched them perform. On the day of my visit, the tables were to be turned and Solomon was to perform a concert for the campers. Singing for a group of rowdy kids was quite a change from Solomon's last gig -- performing for Michelle Obama -- but she seemed to be having a blast. "All the kids wanna know how the judges are in real life and what it was like being on the show and what has my life been like after the show," said Solomon. She was surprised, she said, by the campers' willingness to perform on command. "They're only 10 to 15, and they get up at the drop of a dime," she marveled. "They're just like, 'I can do it!' " |

| Vonzell will be at Idol Camp for the week of July 27th - August 2nd. Idol Camp is the official American Idol performing arts summer camp for kids between the ages of 10 and 15. Located on Pali Mountain, on a private campus in California's picturesque San Bernardino Mountains, Idol Camp offers a well- rounded curriculum designed to foster passion and creativity in a fun-filled, non-competitive environment. Campers create their own schedules by choosing from classes in singing, dancing, acting, song writing, audition and performance techniques, personal style, video production, set design and more." |
