• Idol backup singers comment on Vonzell | 05 Apr 2007 |
Three backup singers (Kenya C. Hathaway, Sharlotte Gibson and Sy Smith) who routinely work with the likes of Beyonce and Mariah Carey are the "American Idol" equivalent of a musical rescue squad, doing everything in their power to make the show's would-be stars shine. When a contestant forgets their words, or starts to go off pitch, the background singers try to help them to make each contestant sound their personal best. This article commented on who the background singers say are the contestants who are the most prepared to perform every week. "The trio relishes contestants who approach the task prepared. This year, that includes Phil Stacey, Doolittle and LaKisha Jones. From seasons past, they fondly recall Vonzell Solomon, Anwar Robinson and Paris Bennett. Solomon "loved music and it just came out of her. It's fun backing up people like that, people who come out there and give it all," Gibson said." To read the full article CLICK HERE |

• 'Gone Country' festival closes with Baby V concert Festival | 31 Mar 2007 |
Baby V's concert About 500 people showed up to the festival Saturday evening to watch Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon perform. Solomon, of Fort Myers, a former "American Idol" finalist, thanked the audience and the festival for inviting her as the parade's grand marshal. This is Baby V's second year performing at the festival. "It is a beautiful day here in L.A.," said Solomon before performing. "Thank you everyone. I had a blast being the grand marshal. It was great." Wearing a shimmery gold miniskirt, tank top, cowboy hat and boots, Baby V fit well with the "Gone Country" theme of the festival. She opened up with songs from varied artists including The Dixie Chicks, Aretha Franklin and Shania Twain. Charlene Casey, 49, of North Fort Myers, who owns Charlene's Classic Carriages, rode the carriage with Solomon and enjoyed it. "This is great," Casey said. "She is so sweet and nice, and down to earth and she was so sweet to my granddaughter." Casey's granddaughter, Mariah Braniff, 6, was glad to meet Solomon and even handed Baby V a bunny rabbit stuffed animal. "I love her," Mariah said. "She is pretty and nice." Lehigh residents Shirley Gibbs and Bienvenido "John" Gibbs came to see Solomon for the second year. "It is great to see one of our own from Lee County who has achieved quite a bit and is giving back to the community," Shirley Gibbs, 65, said. "She is really good," Bienvenido Gibbs, 66, said. "We've followed her career since she was in 'American Idol.'" |
